Garden Of Medicinal Plants And Facilitation Centre

The Ashrama has developed a garden of medicinal plants on a 2 hectare plot of land. Its objective is to maintain a conservatory of the most common and important species of Medicinal and Aromatic plants which are being used in day-to-day primary healthcare, as well as of those which are under threats of extinction.

In order to assess the qualitative composition of raw herbs and herbal products, the Department of AYUSH provided fund to establish a Quality Testing Laboratory (QTL) in 2008 (details given below). All the plant species are authentically identified and labelled by expert taxonomists in it. In many cases, their therapeutic values in curing diseases are also mentioned. The garden contains over 388 species, of which 125 (+) is herbs, 52 (+) shrubs, 29 (+) under-shrubs, 72 (+) trees, 39 (+) climbers and the remaining climbing-shrubs & orchids.

A good number of research institutes, namely IICB, Jadavpur University, Calcutta University, Bose Institute, IRIIM, WB State Council of Science & Technology, Visva-Bharati, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Vishwavidyalaya regularly collect planting materials from it for research purposes. Some species of medicinal plant new to this agro-climatic condition are also there. Besides, orchid species, including a species having medicinal values, have also been kept in it. Its nursery distributes different species of medicinal plants to interested people and institutions for multiplications.
